In recent years, the increasing use of UAVs has brought both convenience and potential security threats. Unauthorized UAV flights may pose risks to critical infrastructure, public safety, and privacy. To address these concerns, it is essential to develop and implement an effective anti – UAV equipment deployment plan.
Border security is an important part of national security and holds great significance for safeguarding national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and social stability.
The threats posed by drones to border security mainly focus on the following aspects:
1.Leaking military secrets.
The photography, audio recording, and some specially designed eavesdropping devices carried by drones will seriously violate the information security of military camps. Currently, consumer-grade drones can generally carry high-definition cameras, oblique photography cameras, mini SAR radars, and other equipment. When drones invade military camps and carry out activities such as photography, videography, audio recording, surveying, measurement, mapping, and recording materials, tracking and photographing the whereabouts of military missions, taking pictures of military equipment, and conducting surveying, mapping, and marking of core areas such as military bases and barracks, it will seriously interfere with the security of military camps and is more likely to lead to the leakage of military secrets.
Threat of terrorist attacks:
Drone terrorism has new characteristics such as concealment and difficulty in prevention. The threats of terrorist attacks by civilian drones include various methods such as maneuvering drones to approach and crash into targets, suicide attacks by tying explosive devices to increase the destructive power, dropping explosives, and releasing harmful substances. Given the current situation of international terrorism and some social contradictions, there is a possibility that some people may use drones maliciously for destructive activities, intending to cause serious accidents and significant property losses. With the increase in the payload capacity of drones, if drones are used to carry out terrorist activities with explosives, and high-lethality weapon explosives of a certain weight are tied to them, it will lead to terrifying consequences. According to public news, members of the extreme terrorist organization “Islamic State” once loaded explosive devices or grenades on multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles and attacked the Iraqi government forces. In January 2019, the Houthi armed group in Yemen used this method to attack the military parade of the government forces, resulting in the death of at least 7 people. Military camps are places with a dense population. Military training, political education, formation training, living and resting, etc. are all activities where people gather. It is necessary to timely detect and prevent the threats brought by “low, slow and small” aerial targets. Therefore, the prevention and control of the low-altitude area in military camps is particularly important.
Disrupting the training order:
According to relevant monitoring data, there have been multiple incidents of drones and remote-controlled aircraft disrupting the border order from 2018 to 2023. When a drone is found to have intruded into the territory at the border, it is necessary to effectively deal with the drone to ensure border security. However, low-altitude defense equipment still lacks rapid and effective means for detecting and countering “low, slow, and small” drones, and a large amount of time is required to handle the threat, which will greatly disrupt border security. Even some “illegally flown” drones fly near border military airports, disrupting the air management order and affecting the safe flight of the air force. Handling “illegal flight” incidents will interfere with the normal aerial training of the military forces, occupy the combat readiness resources of the military, consume a large amount of human and material resources, and pose a serious real threat to air defense security.
Transporting prohibited items:
Currently,with the development of drone technology, illegal elements abroad are using drones illegally. They operate the drones from the territory of other countries and attach prohibited items to the drones, which then enter China through the low-altitude area. Due to China’s long border line and limited number of patrol personnel, these illegal elements take advantage of any loopholes. They use drones to transport drugs, smuggled goods evading taxes, etc., which greatly damages China’s interests and security.
So, it is important to deploy anti drone devices in border areas, prevent the potential threats posed by non-cooperative drones.
